The Bowery Gallery opened on October 31st, 1969. It started in the advent of a figurative art movement emerging in response to the minimalism, conceptualism, and Pop Art in the uptown galleries and museums. Having found alternative inspiration in the grand humanist tradition and in figurative artists of the previous generation such as Rosemary Beck, Paul Georges, Leland Bell, Aristodemos Kaldis and others, a number of younger artists spearheaded by Studio School alumnus, Larry Faden and joined by many of the older artists had formed a group called The Alliance of Figurative Artists. Every Friday they would meet and informally and passionately thrash out the issues they felt were crucial to this new figuration including the pertinence of various subjects, approaches to narration, brushy expressionism vs. "fingernail" realism or wet versus dry painting, and the common problems they faced in representing the three-dimensional world, without irony, on a two-dimensional surface or in sculpture. The meetings often lead to studio visits among artists of like mind where the criticisms were devastatingly to the heart of the matter, as only they could be from trusted eyes.

This was the spirit of friendship and new possibilities in which Larry Faden who had taken the initiative of organizing the first meeting of The Alliance of Figurative Artists, and remembering the energy of the 10th Street gallery movement of the fifties, proposed the formation of an artist-run gallery, The Bowery Gallery, which might set the diversity of the new approaches to figuration that existed at the Alliance meetings against a largely closed officialdom of cold formalism and impact imagery. Another representational gallery, First Street, followed a month or two later. This was followed many months later by Prince Street and much later by Blue Mountain. From the initial group of 23, the list of former and present Bowery members has grown to over a hundred artists. Though members are no longer exclusively figurative, all have shared in their work the same excitement for the celebration of significant form that engendered the Bowery Gallery's founding forty years ago.
