The
Bowery Gallery opened on October 31st, 1969. It started in the advent
of a figurative art movement emerging in response to the minimalism,
conceptualism, and Pop Art in the uptown galleries and museums. Having
found alternative inspiration in the grand humanist tradition and in
figurative artists of the previous generation such as Rosemary Beck,
Paul Georges, Leland Bell, Aristodemos Kaldis and others, a number of
younger artists spearheaded by Studio School alumnus, Larry Faden and
joined by many of the older artists had formed a group called The Alliance
of Figurative Artists. Every Friday they would meet and informally and
passionately thrash out the issues they felt were crucial to this new
figuration including the pertinence of various subjects, approaches to
narration, brushy expressionism vs. "fingernail" realism
or wet versus dry painting, and the common problems they faced in representing
the three-dimensional world, without irony, on a two-dimensional surface
or in sculpture. The meetings often lead to studio visits among artists
of like mind where the criticisms were devastatingly to the heart of
the matter, as only they could be from trusted eyes. PAGES:
