David Mollett and Jessie Hedden

Languedoc, Paintings from France

January 2-27, 2018

Reception: Thursday, January 4, 5-8 pm

Bowery Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit by Alaska painters David Mollett and Jessie Hedden of works created in the environs of Vers-Pont-du-Gard, France. They maintained a six month residency near Avignon from February to August. Both artists will be showing oil on canvas and acrylic on paper paintings done on location from nature. The beautiful sunlit Languedoc countryside provided inspiration for the thirty paintings on exhibit.

Hedden’s favored subjects include still life motifs using local wildflowers as well as numerous views of the Gardon River canyon near Collias. Her practice includes black and white acrylic drawings as well as full color oils and acrylics. Her careful drawing and sensitive color is combined with rhythmic mark making in the surprising original compositions. The paintings form a beautiful expression of light, space and color.

Mollett’s work will include vista landscapes of the Gorge du Gardon, the Vers farming countryside as well as the strange, rugged earth formations near the town of Fournes. His practice is to complete the paintings in the field using the natural light to organize the drawing and color. A particular strength of his work is the clear expression of space and light which creates a vivid sense of the place depicted.

There will be an opening reception for the artists on Thursday, January 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
