Bowery Gallery's 21st Annual Juried Show
Juror: Lance Esplund
July 31 – August 18, 2012
Opening Reception: 5-8pm on Thursday, August 2, 2012
Beginning July 31, the Bowery Gallery on 25th Street in Chelsea presents its annual national juried exhibition. Now in its 21st year, the exhibition has been curated in previous years by painters including William Bailey, Rackstraw Downes, Janet Fish, and Lois Dodd, and by the art critic Jed Perl.
This year's juror, Lance Esplund, is the U.S. art critic for the arts and leisure section of Bloomberg News. He has been an art critic and columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and senior art critic for CityArts Magazine. From 2004 to 2008 he was chief art critic for The New York Sun, and he has been a contributor to Art & Antiques, Art in America, Harper's, Threepenny Review, The New Criterion, The New Republic, The Weekly Standard, and the Yale Review, among others. He served on the Editorial Board and as New York correspondent for Modern Painters.
From hundreds of applicants this year, Mr. Esplund has chosen thirty-seven artists who are represented by one work apiece in the exhibition. Gallerygoers will find artists whose work they know, as well as artists new to the New York scene, from all over the United States. Mr. Esplund's selection includes work in oils, graphite, ink, gouache, and mixed media. The group of works reflects the mix of tradition-conscious figuration and abstraction for which the Bowery Gallery is known. Bowery Gallery exhibitions have been praised this year in The New York Times, on artcritical.com, in CityArts, and on the Huffington Post, among other publications.
The juried exhibition is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm, and continues at the gallery through August 18. For more information contact the gallery at 646-230-6655 or info@bowerygallery.org
